The greatest attraction for anglers remain
undoubtedly the tiger fish. Sioma Camp is a new camp and the
number of anglers so far has been low. However those who have
been trying out our waters all claim that there are many
‘tigers’ and they are huge. The biggest caught so far had a
weight of more than 5 kilos. Many are bigger and simply broke
the line before they could be landed.

On this part of the river – Sioma Camp has
direct access to about 25 km of the Zambezi River - you will
not face the otherwise well known problem of over fishing. So
far there are only few fishing camps in the area and the
conditions of the roads in Zambia’s Western Province forms a
natural barrier against ‘mass tourism’.
Apart from tiger fish – that may be caught by
fly fishers as well – there are plenty of other fish species.
Some of the most popular – that also taste well – are breams. A
few should be mentioned: banded jewelfish, Zambezi river bream,
rainbow bream, green bream and pink bream. Among the largemouth
bream you may catch humpback largemouth, thinface largemouth,
longfin largemouth, purpleface largemouth, brownspot largemouth
and nem bwe. Among the tilapias you may find banded tilapia,
redbreast tilapia, threespot tilapia and greenhead tilapia.
There are different species of suckermouth,
squekers and catfish. The last mentioned may reach sizeable
proportions (up to 50-60 kg). You may also catch blunttooth
catfish, blotched catfish, snake cathish and broadhead catfish.
The silver catfish, perhaps better known as barbell also live
here.
Among the snoutfish we have Western
bottlenose, slender stonebasher, Zambezi parrotfish, bulldog and
Northern Churchill.
There are of course a lot of other fish
species in the Zambezi River. Sioma Camp may also arrange
fishing trips on the Kwando River (towards the border with
Angola).
You may bring your own fishing equipment or
you may wish to rent our equipment. We have some very
experienced boats men with intimate knowledge of the river and
of course the good fishing spots. You may use spinner/blink,
worms or live bait. Fly fishing is an option as well. In
accordance with the eco tourism approach Sioma Camp follows the
‘catch and release’ policy.
Guests who are also sport anglers may choose
to focus on fishing only or combine a stay at Sioma Camp with
‘wildlife/bush’ safari (in the bush camp) and/or bird walks.
Please take a look at our standard tour/package program which of
course can be adapted individual requirements. Send us a mail
and we will have a lookat it and give you a feedback.
